Business Overview
World leading producer of aromatics
Petrochemicals made from petroleum or natural gas make up for the drawbacks of natural materials such as wood and rubber. They are used as the core materials in countless industries, from automobiles and electronics to construction and clothing.
GS Caltex is the world’s largest producer of aromatics as a single plant. Thanks to continued investments, we have competitive facilities and annual production capacity of 1.35 million tons for paraxylene alone, and 2.8 million tons for aromatics (benzene, toluene, xylene) as a whole.

Paraxylene
Annual production of 1.35 million tons, supplied as feedstock for TPA
Paraxylene is a clear and colorless liquid that is volatile and has a distinctive smell. It is one of the isomers of xylene which consists of two methyl groups attached to a benzene ring. GS Caltex produces 1.35 million tons of paraxylene a year which is supplied as a basic raw material for terephthalic acid (TPA).
Applications
Paraxylene is a feedstock for terephthalic acid (TPA), a raw material for synthetic resins such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and synthetic textiles like polyester, and dimethyl terephthalate (DMT).
Precautions for users
Paraxylene is a highly flammable and toxic compound requiring the utmost care to prevent fire and leakage. Anyone who handles paraxylene must fully understand and observe the "Material Safety Data sheet (MSDS)” and wear appropriate protective gear. In wintertime, paraxylene must be stored at an appropriate temperature due to its unusually high freezing point.
